From the moment I saw the title, I knew I would like this book. “Love Songs Suck” by Becky Monson is the type of book that I would write – the pop star, the quiet girl, and a song that brought them together.

I love a good pop star/rock star romance, and “Love Songs Suck” fit the bill. The connection between Finn and Louella was instant, and you knew that this would be the couple of the book.

Finn, being a member of the boy band “More Than That,” made me think this band was based on Backstreet Boys since they have a song with the same title, but could it be an American version of One Direction? They have a song called “More Than This.”

Regardless, Finn’s aspects remind me of a mixture of Nick Carter and Kevin Richardson: the hot boy next door but the sensitive soul who plays the guitar and writes love songs. He’s not the typical fictional boy band member. He’s serious about music, whereas some of the other members of his band are more about being in gossip magazines.

Louella is a breath of fresh air. She isn’t pining after the singer and heartthrob of the group. She’s engaged to a guy who, frankly, sounds like a dick. It’s nice to see that Finn falls head over heels for Louella instead of the other way around. He could have any girl he wanted, and he was smitten with Louella so severely that he wrote her a song.

A song with her name as the title.

It takes a lot for a book to pull me in. I’m more of a writer than a reader, but “Love Songs Suck” really did just that. It made me want to read or write another book, which hasn’t happened to me in a while.
